Sample Collection Information Document for Chemicals, Radiochemicals, Pathogens and Biotoxins: Companion to Selected Analytical Methods for Environmental Remediation and Recovery (SAM) 2022. U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, Washington, DC, EPA/600/R-22/255, 2023.

Impact/Purpose:

The Sample Collection Information Document for Chemicals, Radiochemicals, Pathogens and Biotoxins is a companion to EPA’s Selected Analytical Methods for Environmental Remediation and Recovery (SAM) and provides general information for collection of samples that are to be analyzed using the specific methods and procedures listed in SAM. This document provides information regarding sample containers, preservation, size, packaging and sources for additional information supporting collection of samples that can be used by EPA and EPA-contractors when collecting samples in support of environmental remediation following an intentional or accidental homeland security-related contamination incident. This document provides only summary information regarding collection of samples to be analyzed for measurement of the chemicals, radiochemicals, pathogens and biotoxins using the methods and procedures listed in SAM 2022. It does not provide details regarding sample collection procedures or the corresponding analytical methods. Although at this time not all of the information has been tested for every analyte or sample type, the information listed is considered by the SAM work groups to be the most appropriate and available at the time of publication. Many of the target analytes listed in this document have only recently become an environmental concern, and EPA is actively pursuing development and validation of appropriate sample collection procedures. The information will be reviewed and updated periodically, along with the selected methods in SAM, to reflect advances in technologies, results of method evaluation and validation studies, and additional analytes or matrices

Description:

The SCID is a companion document to the SAM document and will need to be updated to match the SAM 2022 document. Revisions continue from STRAP3. Supports ESAM.
